BLACKOUT

Blackout is a new play about six strangers who collide on a street corner in Hell’s Kitchen during an extended NYC blackout and their struggle to hold onto what they found in the dark once the lights come back on.

Blackout premiered Off-Broadway at Theater Row, produced by The Cell Theater.

“Michael I. Walker’s likable dramatic comedy hinges on the power outage of August, 2003, when New Yorkers—still wary after 9/11—managed to let their guards down and forge immediate bonds. Set in Hell’s Kitchen, on the stoop of a jazz bar owned by a philosophical black saxophonist (Kevin Mambo), the play concerns the erotic collisions and realignments among a small group of strangers. The first to meet are a daffy Southern Baptist gal, whose love for James Baldwin inspired her ill-timed trip to New York, and a lonely, gay writer manqué. Other sorts of yin-yang pairings follow, and Walker’s dramatizations of them are especially lively.”    - THE NEW YORKER

“Walker…shrewdly notes that people sometimes walk away from themselves during a crisis, opening themselves up for a brief time to become someone else -- someone better.” - VARIETY

“In Blackout, Michael I. Walker’s engaging, insightful new play… six strangers meet on a Hell's Kitchen street corner during the 2003 New York City blackout. They let down their guard and turn to one another for help and understanding, forging unexpected relationships that endure beyond the crisis.”   - BACKSTAGE

“The wistful yearning that the characters express in Walker's new play…seems to come directly from TENNESSEE Williams' pen…Walker introduces characters who are both appealing and intriguing…Walker, with the often heightened language he gives his characters, demonstrates that he's a playwright whose work bears watching. It's an evening of theatrical promise, much like that night when New Yorkers rallied in complete darkness.” – AMERICAN THEATER WEB

“Inspired by the works of James Baldwin, 'Blackout,' is a clever, contemporary examination of sex, race, faith, and electrical power.”  - AOL BLACK VOICES

LETTER FROM ALGERIA

Letters From Algeria is a new play that tells the story of three young Americans studying abroad, and reveals the class envy and emotional manipulation that dwell just below the surface of the ex-pat life, where everyone is trying to reinvent themselves. Sex. Drugs. Imperialism. Everybody's got something to write home about.

Letter From Algeria premiered Off-Broadway at the Abingdon Theater, produced by GroundUp Productions.

“Walker has a flair for crafting witty dialogue and vivid characters while juggling complex themes of class struggle and imperialism…this is a finely polished production, an excellent showcase for such a promising playwright.” - TheaterOnline
